M.Visveshvaraya is a renowened Indian Engineer who is very famous for his architect works and the one who constructed the famous "Krishnaraja Sagar Dam", Mysore.  He was awarded the India's highest civilian award "Bharat Ratna" by the central Government of India for his innovation in Agriculture and other works. His great expertise and tremendous architectural works helped the future of the Independent India in a great constructive way and we will see his personal life  history and with his achievements.

Birth

M Vishweshwarya was born in a Brahmin family as the son of Srinivasa Shastri and Venkatalakshmiamma in the village of Mutanahalli in the district of Singapallapura (after being separated from the Kolar district) in the Indian state of Karnataka on 15th September 1860.

Early life and education

At the age of fifteen, Vishvesvaraya lost his father who done his early education in Singapallupura and high school education in Bengaluru. In 1881, he completed his undergraduate degree from the University of Madras and later completed his engineering  at the College of Engineering , Pune.

Career

Visvesvaraya took a job with the PWD of Bombay and later was invited to join the Indian Irrigation Commission. He achieved great success in his career and here are some of his milestones.

He designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates that were first installed in 1903 at Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune. Based on the success of these gates, the same system was installed at the Tigra Dam in Gwalior and Krishna Raja Sagara (KRS) Dam in Mandya/Mysore, Karnataka.

Visvesvaraya achieved celebrity status when he designed a flood protection system for city of Hyderabad. He was instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion. 

Visvesvaraya gave his valuable technical advice for the location of Mokama Bridge over Ganga in Bihar. At the time, he was over 90 years old. He was instrumental in charting out the plan for road construction between Tirumala and Tirupati

Father of Modern Mysore State

He was called "Father of Modern Mysore State" (now Karnataka). During his service with the government of Mysore State, he was responsible for founding the following ventures:
  • Mysore Soap Factory 
  • Parasitoid Laboratory
  • Mysore Iron & Steel Works (now known as Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Limited) in Bhadravathi
  • Sri Jayachamarajendra Polytechnic, Bangalore
  • Bangalore Agricultural University 
  • State Bank of Mysore
  • Century Club
  • Mysore Chamber of Commerce (presently known as the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FKCCI)) 
  • Visvesvaraya College of Engineering Bangalore

He encouraged private investment in the industry during his tenure as Diwan of Mysore.Sir M.Visvesvaraya is known to have designed and planned the entire area of Jayanagar in south Bangalore. The foundation of Jayanagar was laid in 1959. It was one of first planned neighborhoods in Bangalore and, at the time, the largest in Asia. It is believed that locality, designed by M.Visvesvaraya, is one of the best-planned layouts in Asia.

Works on Kannada 

He was known for sincerity, time management, and dedication to a cause. A very important part of his nature was his love for Kannada. He set up the Kannada Parishat for the upliftment of Kannada. He wanted seminars for Kannada lovers to be instituted and conducted in Kannada itself.

Death

He retired from the responsibility of Diwan of Mysore in 1918. He was working hard even after the retirement he died on April 14th 1962 at the age of 101.
