ISWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR

Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, a famous scholar and writer, devoted his entire life to the cause of social welfare so that even today songs continue to be composed and sung in his honor. Born in the district of Hugli - West Bengal in 1820. Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar dedicated all his time and the whole of his wealth to social reform activities even through times when he was completely deserted by all his near and dear ones. The fact that he could write brilliantly to convey his themes and ideas proved a great asset to his realization of the many goals he held set for himself.

ISWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR BIOGRAPHY

ISWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR was born in 26th September 1820 in a village name Birshinga, Medinipur district under Bengal Presidency. His parents are Hakurdas Bandyopadhyay and Bhagavati Devi. His wife name is Dinamani Devi and his son name is Narayan Chandra Bandyopadhyay. The economic condition of his family is not well, he learned basics of Sanskrit at the village pathshaala after which he set out for calcutta with his father in 1826.

His father stayed at Burrabazar area in Calcutta and money was scarce so Ishwar worked as household support after his studies. In night time he used to study in street lamps.He scored through all his lessons and cleared all exams. He learned literature in Sanskrit College during 1829 to 1841 with scholarships and later took up teaching position in Jorasanko. He took part in a competition on Sanskrit Knowledge in 1839 and earned the title of 'Vidyasagar' meaning 'Ocean of Knowledge'. He cleared Law examination in the same year.

Vidyasagar is credited for remodelling the system prevailing in sanskrit college and bring modern insights in education system.He bring Englist and Bengali with the existing medium of learning with sanskrit. He introduced courses of European history, Philosophy and Science . He allowed the sanskrit college rules by allowing non brahmins to enroll in this prestigious instutuion.


ishwar chandra vidyasagar story on educational reforms include introduced the concept of admission fee and tutuion fee in Calcutta. He wrote two books ' Byakaran Koumudi' and 'Upakramonika' which interpret the complex sanskrit notions in easy bengali language. He helped his students to get job in government offices through his contacts.

ISWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR CONTRIBUTION

One of his deepest concern was the prohibition of widow remarriage in the Indian Socitey of his times. After publishing a pamphlet on widow remarriage in 1854, he continued to justify his viewpoint to pundits and reputed persons who clearly opposed his stand tooth and nail.Finally, he was able to get the Widow Marriage Act passed in 1865. But this earned him an unlimited amount of criticism. He was excommunicated and his friends refused to support him. Nevertheless, he continued to conduct widow marriage ceremonies. True to his last, he had his own son married to a widow.

ISWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR CONTRIBUTION include his works to rid the society of the pratices of child marriage and polygamy. Eduction was also a matter that received much of his sincere attention. Vidyasagar,regarded as a creator of the Bengali language as it exits today, had himself received a liberal education at the Sanskrit College. He published a number of works for use by school students. 

His works include the Betal Panchabingsati - 1846, Upakramanika, writing on Sanskrit grammer; the Bengali translation of Shakuntala, all in the early 1850's and books including the Charitaboli, Kothamala, Barnaporichoy. He also set up many schools for providing eduction to girls though these were shut down later on. He set up a college as well, the Metropolitan Institution.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar passed away on 29 July, 1891 at the age of 70 years.
