Hampi is also famous for its ruined historical monuments and the architectural features of the surrounding the city. This is the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and the holiest, beautiful and outstanding of the architectural style of the Hoysala architecture. We will look more details of this in the following sections.

Ancient City
Hampi is an ancient city. Although it was mentioned as kishkinda in the epic Ramayana in ancient times, it was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Location of Hampi
Hampi is about 350 kms from Bangalore in the northern part of Karnataka State, India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is an international cultural center which attracts millions of tourists annually.

Hampi is also famous not just for the architectural marvels and historical ruins but also known for its spiritual historical background. There are many famous temples here. There are temples like Virupaksha Temple, Vittala Temple and Anjaneya Temple. One of Karnataka's major rivers, Tungabhatra, runs through this city.

Architecture marvels of vijayanagara kingdom
From the hills surrounding the Hampi region of the Vijayanagara Empire, the Vijayanagara rulers have been able to get the required stones or granites to raise stone carvings of the temples . We can imagine the connection between the magnificent rocks behind the Nandhi statue and the rocks behind the statue.

Archaeological excavations are still undergoing excavation at Hampi. Every day, a variety of historical artifacts are a continuation. The archaeological museum is also a must visit for those who visit the archaeological museum and historic monuments.

Natural Security fortress
The hampi is surrounded by the Tungabhadra river on one side and surrounded by three hills on the other side which protect the town as Security fortress. The rulers of vijayanagara kindom choose this location as their capital for this effective security reasons.

An Important spot for toruists
This is the peak of the Hoysala Dynasty architecture and one should not miss out Hampi to while any tourist visiting south India. Such a visit to the eyes of the visitors today is a delight to the nature and archaeological experience of tourists.

Anegundi village is located 10 km from Hampi on the northern bank of the Tungabhadra River. At that time, it served as local capital of the Vijayawada Empire. Anegundi means elephant in Kannada. There is a historical evidence that this town is older than Hampi.

Ramayanam
According to the Ramayana epic, it is believed that Kishkinda was ruled by the Sukrivan king. Anjanadri hill is believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman. Travelers need to plan early to see this Anegundi site.


Beautiful & Calm Atmosphere
Unlike the atmosphere of the Hampi streets, the Anegundi village is a temperate and peaceful environment. Now the new bridge across the Tungabhadra River will further enhance the convenience of travelers to Anegundi. Travelers visiting Anekundi can also enjoy seeing the Shiva Kavi Ranganath Bahavan Temple, Ganesh Temple, Chintamani Shiva Temple, Huchihipana Monastery and a Jain Temple.

Anjanadri Hills
According to the Ramayana myth, this Anjanadri hill is believed to be the birth place of Hanuman. There is a beautiful temple here dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The temple is atop the Anjanadri Hills. It is noteworthy that this temple is situated on top of the 570 steps. When you step in these steps you can see a lot of monkeys on the way. When we dont trouble them they do not bother us. Anjanadri Hills is a place where devotees of Hanuman are regularly worshiped.

Tanks,Canals and Irrigation
Many canals have been created in Hampi for the purpose of water to palaces, temples, water pools for agricultural lands. The Raya canal (the Raja river), the dhoorthu canal (the quick drain canal), the Kamalapuram tank and the Basavanna canal have been created by the Vijayanagara rulers. Some of the canals, especially the canals running in the valley, are still used for agricultural irrigation
We can see in Hampi that a number of waterways can be built by rocks and connected to many parts of the palace. Particularly important is the large waterway bridge at Virupapur Gatte in Hampi.

Museum
The museum in Kamalapura has two samples of Hampi City showcased. By looking at these patterns, travelers can easily understand the design, direction and location of the city of Hampi and its location. The sample form put in the last column of the museum provides accurate description of the palace area.

This archaeological museum is closed on Fridays and government holidays. All the other days open from 10 am to 5 pm. Tourists visiting Hampi are advised to visit this museum.

Padava Lingam
The 9 feet tall padava lingam is located near to the  Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. The lingam is designed to be immersed in water inside a waterway. This lingam is craved on single stone and has three eyes carved. It is considered as three eyes of Lord Shiva. The divinity and the architectural features of this temple are beyond any words to explain this.The construction of the lingam and the sculptures surrounded by a single stone, however, have a fantastic nature. 

Chandramauliswarar temple
The temple is located in the 15th century and attracts a lot of pilgrims. Located in the middle of Hampi, this temple is located on the same straight line as the Vitthala Temple.
