Pakyong - Sikkim Green Field Airport Inauguration | Green Field Airports in India
Greenfield Airport
In simple terms, a Greenfield airport is where all activities from planning to commissioning are carried out from scratch. These airports will be planned in cities which are not connected by airservices or those where the existing airports are reaching capacity constraints and unable to expand further to meet the growing demands of passenger traffic.
Difference between Greenfield Airport and Brownfield Airport
A Brownfield airport is the one which is build on a land previously used for industrial purpose or commercial use. In terms of airports it is build or extended on an existing infrastructure. For example Mumbai Chatrapathi Shivaji International Airport. In case of Greenfield airport which is one build from scratch on a new or undeveloped site. Therefore, it has no constraints due to prior work or existing infrastructure. For example Bangalore' Kempagowda International Airport is one build from scratch of all activities from planning to commissioning.
Pakyong - Sikkim's first Greenfield Airport
Today 24/9/2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first ever airport of Sikkim at Pakyong, which will be a major benefit for the people of the state and will improve the connectivity in that area. The Sikkim's objective of having an airport has come true after nine years after a foundation stone of the green field was laid in 2009. This airport is around 33km away from Gangtok.
The airport is spread over 201 acres and is located on top of a hill about two km from Pakyong village at 4,500 feet above sea level. The airport was constructed by the Airports Authority of India. At present, the nearest airport from Sikkim is located 124 km away in Bagdogra district of West Bengal.
The airport was constructed with an estimated expenditure of Rs 605 crore, and is an "engineering marvel" for its soil reinforcement and slope stabilization techniques, keeping in view the altitude it was built at.Apart from this, the reinforcement wall of the project is 80-metre-high, and is one of the tallest in the world.
The Pakyong airport is located around 60 km from the Indo-China border.Initially the airport would only cater to domestic flights, but later it will also provide international flight services connecting Sikkim with other countries like Paro in Bhutan, Kathmandu in Nepal and Dhaka in Bangladesh.
