Christ the Redeemer - Statue of the Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil- Symbol of Peace




Christ the Redeemer, an art statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil created by French sculptor Paul Landowski and build by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and collaborated with French engineer Albert caquot . The Romanian sculptor Gheorghe Leonida designed the face of the statue.

The statue was constructed between 1922 - 1931 and the statue is 30 meters (98 Feet) high excluding it 8 meters (26 Feet) pedestal. The arms stretch 28 meters (92 Feet) wide.

The statue is the symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue weighs 635 metric tons. It is located in the Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National park overlooking the city of Rio de Janeiro and it is placed at the peak of 700 meters (2300 Feet) height. The statue is made of reinforced concrete.

History


In 1850, the priest name Pedro Maria Boss first suggested placing a Christian monument on Mount Corcovado but the proposel rejected by the Emperor Pedro II.

In 1889, the proposed statue was dismissed due to the separation of church and state.

In 1920, the catholic circle of Rio made a second proposal for a land mark statue and organized events to collect funds. There are various designs of statue of Christ under consideration, the statue of Christ the Redeemer with open arms , a symbol of peace was choosen.

The Construction took nine years from 1922 to 1931 and the monument opened on 12th October, 1931. In October 2006, the monument completed 75th Anniversary.

Damages & Restoration

In Feb 10th, 2008 a lightning struck the statue during a violent thunderstorm causing some damages to the fingers, head and eyebrows. The Rio de Janeiro statue govt. initiated a restoration effort to replace outer soapstone layers and the lightning rods on the statue.

In 2010, a massive restoration of the statue began. The restoration work included cleaning, replacing the mortar and soapstone on the exterior and restoring iron in the internal structures. It also includes waterproofing the monument. In Jan 17th, 2014 a lightning damaged a finger on the right hand.
