Kadaknath Chicken - The Black Meat Chicken
Kadaknath is a Black Meat Chicken Breed from India. It is also a native bird of Madhya Pradesh where it is known as “Kali masi” (“fowl having black flesh”).The Kadaknath is popular mainly for its adaptability, and the good-tasting black meat, which is believed to infuse vigor.Its color stems from the deposition of melanin pigment. The generally available colors of kadaknath are jet-black, penciled and golden.
Kadaknath is very familiar among the Adivasis [tribal communities] mainly due to its adaptability to the local environment, tasty meat quality, disease resistance, texture, and flavor. Though the meat of this breed is black, it is considered not only a delicacy of distinctive taste but also of medicinal value.
The Kadaknath is mostly found in eastern Madhya Pradesh. Its flesh is black in color, because of the higher melanin content. Once reared mainly by tribal communities such as the Bhils and its meat is highly prized as an aphrodisiac delicacy and as a restorative.
