Hima Das Gold in IAAF 400 Meter Final

The Hima Das is
the first Indian track Athlete to win a Gold medal in U20 IAAF [ International Association of Athletics Federations] International Championships at Tampere, Finland on Thursday.
Hima Das - Bio
Hima Das was born
in a farming family and she is youngest of six children's of her
parents jomali and Ronjit Das. She was born in 9th January 2000 at Nagaon, Assam state of India.
She was identified by Mr. Nippon Das, an
athletics coach with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare during an
inter district meet. Later Hima Das was asked to shift to Guwahati for coaching,
better facilities and to make a career in athletics by her coach Mr. Nippon
Das.
Nipon arranged a
rented accommodation near the Sarusajai Sports Complex for Hima Das to stay. He
inducted her into the Assam state academy, which specialized in boxing,
athletics and football.
When Nippon referred her interstate event “She ran like a wind and win gold in 100 and 200
with cheap spikes, I hadn’t seen such a talent in ages”.

In 2018
commonwealth games she was in both 400 meters and 4*400 meters relay. In 400 she
was qualified for final where she finished at sixth and 1.17 seconds behind the
gold medalist Amantle Montsho from Botswana.
In 4*400 meters relay she was part
of the Indian Team in which they where finished at seventh in the final.
However her
personal best is not Tampere but the inter state championships at Guwahati on this June where she cloaked 51.13 seconds.

Hima Das is the
first Indian track athlete to ever win a gold medal. She won the
Women’s 400m at World U-20 IAAF World Championships 2018 at Tampere, Finaland
at a record time of 51.46 seconds. She edged out Romania’s Andrea Milkos [Silver]
and America’s Taylor Manson [Bronze].
Hima Das started
slow in the initial home stretch but she started picking up in the final 80 meter where
she took over three rivals in clocking 51.46 seconds.
Hima Das joined the
elite club of Indian athletes who won the medals at U20 World Championships.
Appreciation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too reached out to
congratulate her. “India is delighted and proud of athlete Hima Das, who won a
historic Gold in the 400m of World U20 Championships... This accomplishment
will certainly inspire young athletes in the coming years,” he posted on
Twitter.
